Latest NewsThat award is given out at the SMALL PRESS EXPO, which I am tabling at as I usually do, in Bethesda MD on September 13 and 14. This is my first comics event in almost a YEAR, which is wild to contemplate. Anyway THE BOOK is debuting there and will be available online around that time too. If you are in DC environs, hELLO. Latest Letter Columnbtw, if you’re open to answering (no worries if not): in the cases where the Corners front vowel (the one that looks like ∪) gets transliterated as "I", is that always intended to be pronounced as /i/ ("ee"), as opposed to /ɪ/ ("ih")? I think at the beginning, /ɪ/ looked like a plausible pronunciation for the various "I"s we saw in the transliterations, but as we got more material, and based on the couple of videos where you’ve read Corners out loud, I’m suspecting that it’s probably been /i/ the entire time. (This is just for the benefit of the pronunciation notes in the doc; not intentionally trying to dredge for secrets.) Lux via the Discord * August 13, 2025 BASICALLY within corners script there’s an inexact system relying on an imagined of "range" of vowels-- the upturned bowl can be something like Spanish I or E, the circle can be A as in "father" or A as in "apple," the downturned bowl can be something like Spanish O or U. And there’s also the dash character which is I guess nominally an "uh" but could edge somewhat closer to the Spanish E sometimes. In transliteration I’m trying to present a more phonetically accurate picture sometimes. BUT this is all a little looser than I’d like sometimes! The salient idea is: corners writing conventions are in some areas looser and more mnemonic than our use of latin letters in English. There IS an "objective" phonetic rendering one can imagine of the language, and which I try to replicate. Though one could also imagine that looseness contributing to some wider deviations in pronunciation. I regret that instead of answering the question i am just riffing on its usefulness vis a vis my precious Themes and Motifs |
